Southern corn leaf blight

Drechslera maydis

Description

Drechslera maydis (syn. Bipolaris maydis) is a destructive phytopathogenic fungus within the Kingdom Fungi, belonging to the genus Drechslera. This pathogen is the primary cause of Southern corn leaf blight, a disease that significantly impacts maize production worldwide. While primarily affecting corn, the fungus can also colonize various other cereal crops, leading to severe necrotic tissue damage.

The disease is characterized by the development of distinct lesions on leaves, leaf sheaths, and husks. Early symptoms manifest as small, water-soaked spots that elongate over time into tan or brown necrotic areas, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Under severe infection, the foliage may wilt and dry prematurely, drastically reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity and hindering grain filling.

The biological life cycle involves the production of conidia, which act as primary inocula, dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or insect vectors. The pathogen overwinters as mycelium or conidia on crop debris, in soil, or on infected seeds. With the arrival of favorable warm, humid conditions, the spores germinate to infect the lower leaves, continuing the cycle throughout the growing season.

Environmental factors are critical for the proliferation of this pathogen. It thrives in high humidity (above 90%) and moderate-to-warm temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. These conditions favor rapid spore germination and lesion expansion. Poor agronomic practices, such as lack of crop rotation and minimal tillage leaving infected debris on the surface, contribute significantly to the disease pressure.

The economic impact of Southern corn leaf blight is substantial, often resulting in significant yield losses and lower grain quality. Effective management strategies include:

  • Utilizing genetically resistant maize hybrids.
  • Practicing crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum.
  • Deep plowing to bury infected crop residues.
  • Applying fungicides during critical growth stages when environmental conditions are conducive to infection.
