Taxonomic position and pathogen type. Drechslera rostrata is a fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Drechslera within the division Ascomycota. It is an imperfect fungus known for its significant role in causing various leaf spot diseases across a diverse range of botanical hosts, specifically targeting cereal and grass families.
Diseases and host crops. This pathogen is responsible for Helminthosporium-like leaf spots, affecting stems, foliage, and seeds. Primary hosts include wheat, barley, maize, sorghum, and numerous wild grasses. The disease manifests as necrotic lesions that disrupt the plant's structural and metabolic integrity, leading to severe yield losses in favorable conditions.
Biology and life cycle. The fungus survives as mycelium or conidia in infested plant debris, soil, or on infected seed surfaces. During the growing season, the dispersal of conidia occurs via wind, rain splashes, or mechanical vectors. Upon landing on a suitable host surface, the conidia germinate, and the mycelium penetrates plant tissues to begin the infectious cycle.
Environmental conditions and impact. Development is favored by high humidity (80% and above) and warm temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C. The pathogen causes premature senescence of leaves, reducing the plant's ability to accumulate biomass. This results in significant reduction in seed filling and overall grain quality, making it a critical threat in humid agricultural regions.
