Description

Exserohilum is a genus of dematiaceous (dark-pigmented) fungi belonging to the order Pleosporales. This group of fungi includes significant plant pathogens responsible for various leaf blights and root diseases. The most economically devastating species, Exserohilum turcicum, is the primary causal agent of Northern Corn Leaf Blight (NCLB), which affects maize crops globally, particularly in humid temperate and tropical regions.

The disease manifestation typically starts on the lower leaves, appearing as small, elliptical, water-soaked lesions. As the pathogen progresses, these lesions expand into elongated, cigar-shaped necrotic areas of a tan or gray-brown color. Under conditions of high pathogen pressure, severe foliage loss occurs, which severely restricts the plant's ability to produce assimilates for grain filling.

The biological cycle of Exserohilum involves the production of multi-septate conidia. These spores are disseminated primarily by wind and splashing rain. The pathogen survives between cropping seasons as mycelium or chlamydospores on infected crop debris left on the soil surface, as well as on alternative weed hosts and contaminated seed lots.

The development and spread of Exserohilum are highly dependent on environmental factors. The fungus thrives in moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 27°C and requires prolonged periods of high leaf wetness or high humidity (above 90%) for successful spore germination and penetration of leaf tissue. Frequent rain events during the silking stage of corn often trigger major disease outbreaks.

The impact of Exserohilum on agricultural productivity is characterized by significant yield losses, which can exceed 30-50% in highly susceptible hybrids. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

  • Selection of resistant or tolerant crop hybrids.
  • Crop rotation with non-host species to break the pathogen cycle.
  • Tillage practices that bury infected crop residues.
  • Timely application of systemic fungicides during the early stages of disease.
  • Balanced nutrient management to promote crop health and vigor.
