Exserohilum halodes is a filamentous fungal phytopathogen classified within the genus Exserohilum. As an imperfect fungus, it primarily functions as a necrotrophic pathogen, infecting various economically significant crops by causing necrotic lesions on foliage and stems.
This fungus is known to affect a wide range of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, including maize, sorghum, and several ornamental species. Typical symptoms include the development of elongated, necrotic spots, which are often surrounded by chlorotic halos, ultimately leading to leaf blight and reduced photosynthetic capacity.
The life cycle of Exserohilum halodes involves the production of conidia that serve as primary and secondary inoculum. These spores are dispersed via wind currents, rain splash, or agricultural machinery. Once they settle on susceptible tissue, they germinate under favorable conditions, forming appressoria to penetrate the host epidermis.

Extended periods of leaf wetness are essential for the germination of conidia and subsequent colonization, making rainy seasons high-risk periods for rapid field spread.
