Fusarium poae is a fungal plant pathogen belonging to the genus Fusarium within the Nectriaceae family. It is a filamentous fungus that acts as a significant agent of plant disease, primarily affecting cereal crops. As a producer of various mycotoxins, this species poses a substantial threat to agricultural productivity and the quality of harvested grains worldwide.
The primary disease associated with this fungus is Fusarium Head Blight (FHB), also known as scab. Besides affecting the ears of wheat, barley, and oats, Fusarium poae is responsible for seedling blight and root rot. The infection manifests as bleaching of the spikelets, often accompanied by the characteristic pinkish or orange fungal mass, which severely impacts grain filling and crop quality.
The life cycle of Fusarium poae is complex, involving saprophytic survival on crop residues and soil, followed by parasitic infection. The fungus produces conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum. Dissemination typically occurs through wind currents and rain splashes. Once the spores land on susceptible host tissue, particularly during the flowering stage, they initiate an infection that spreads rapidly under conducive environmental conditions.
Environmental factors play a decisive role in the disease epidemic. High relative humidity and warm temperatures during the anthesis period are the primary drivers of Fusarium poae outbreaks. The fungus thrives in moist environments, making fields with dense vegetation and accumulated plant debris particularly susceptible to severe infections during rainy seasons.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize disease impact. Key strategies include the adoption of crop rotation schemes that break the fungal life cycle by avoiding susceptible hosts in succession. Furthermore, the use of certified fungicide-treated seeds and the application of foliar fungicides during the critical flowering stage are essential to reduce pathogen pressure and prevent the accumulation of hazardous mycotoxins in the final product.
