It is widely recognized as a causal agent of stalk rot, ear rot, and seedling blight, causing major economic losses in agricultural production worldwide.
The biology of F. subglutinans is centered on the production of microconidia and macroconidia, which are easily disseminated by wind and water splashes. The fungus persists in the soil, on crop residues, and within seeds. Its ability to undergo both sexual and asexual reproduction allows it to adapt quickly to different environmental conditions and host resistance mechanisms.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. High humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C provide an ideal environment for spore germination and colonization of host tissues. Prolonged wet periods during the silking stage of corn are particularly conducive to heavy outbreaks of ear rot caused by this specific fungus.
