Systematic position and nature: Fusarium verticillioides is an ascomycete fungus belonging to the genus Fusarium. It is a cosmopolitan plant pathogen known for its systemic infection potential. The fungus acts as a hemibiotroph, initially colonizing tissues and later switching to a saprophytic lifestyle on decaying plant material.
Host range and diseases: The pathogen primarily affects corn (Zea mays), causing Fusarium ear rot, stalk rot, and seedling blight. It is also found on other crops such as sorghum, rice, and sugarcane. The infection manifests as visible cottony fungal growth on kernels, often resulting in discolored, shriveled, or rotten grains.
Biology and lifecycle: The pathogen survives as mycelium or microconidia in infected crop residues, soil, and seeds. Inoculum is spread by wind and rain splash to the silks of the ear during the pollination period. Once established, the fungus grows through the silk into the kernels, eventually colonizing the entire cob if environmental conditions are favorable.
Conditions for development: Warm and humid weather conditions (20–30°C) significantly promote the development and spread of the pathogen. Fusarium verticillioides is particularly notorious for the production of secondary metabolites known as fumonisins. These mycotoxins accumulate in grain and represent a severe safety risk for food and feed industries worldwide.
Control and management: Controlling Fusarium verticillioides requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy.
