Gibberella subglutinans is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. Known widely for its anamorphic state, Fusarium subglutinans, this fungus serves as a primary agent responsible for various fusarium diseases that affect a wide range of crops worldwide, impacting both crop yield and quality.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include maize (corn), wheat, sorghum, and other cereals. It is a notorious cause of fusarium ear rot, seedling blight, and root rot. The infection manifests as visible fungal mycelium, often appearing as a white to salmon-pink powdery growth on the infected parts of the plant, such as kernels, ears, or stem tissues.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by its ability to survive as mycelium or spores within infected plant debris left in the field.
