Fusarium stalk rot

Gibberella

Description

Fusarium stalk rot is a significant fungal disease caused by various Fusarium species, most notably Gibberella zeae (the teleomorph stage). This disease targets the vascular system and structural integrity of the plant, often leading to lodging and reduced yield potential.

The disease frequently affects key agricultural crops, including corn, common sunflower, and Jerusalem artichoke (topinambur). Susceptibility levels vary depending on environmental stressors and the specific hybrid or variety used by the producer.

Symptoms are often observed during the maturation stage of the crop. Visible signs include leaf yellowing, wilting, and the development of distinct white or pink mycelial growth on the exterior of the stalk. Internally, the pith becomes discolored and disintegrated, making the plant highly vulnerable to wind damage.

The pathogen thrives in warm, humid conditions, typically between 20°C and 25°C. Spores survive in crop residues and soil, dispersing via wind and rain splashes. Early-season stress, such as nutrient deficiencies or insect damage to the stalk, significantly increases the risk of successful infection.

Effective control requires an integrated approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of high-quality fungicide seed treatments, implement rigorous crop rotation, and ensure proper management of crop debris. Additionally, selecting resistant hybrids and controlling stalk-boring insects are essential steps for preventing outbreaks.

  • Applying systemic fungicide seed treatments.
  • Maintaining a healthy crop rotation schedule.
  • Destroying crop debris to remove inoculum sources.
  • Managing insect pests that create entry wounds in stalks.
