Description

Gibberella tricincta, the teleomorph of the fungus Fusarium tricinctum, is a significant plant pathogen within the Nectriaceae family. It is recognized as an opportunistic parasite that frequently inhabits crop debris and soil, posing a recurring threat to the yield and safety of cereal crop production worldwide.

The fungus is primarily associated with fusarium head blight (FHB), seedling blight, and root rot. It infects a wide range of hosts, including wheat, barley, maize, and various oats. The pathogen destroys grain tissues, leading to poor seed development and significant reductions in both the quantity and quality of the final harvest.

The life cycle begins with the pathogen surviving on crop residues or in the soil through chlamydospores and mycelium. During humid conditions, the fungus produces spores that are dispersed by wind and rain splashes to the flowering spikes of plants. Once the infection is established, the fungus rapidly colonizes the plant host, especially under favorable climatic conditions.

Environmental conditions such as high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C during the anthesis stage are ideal for infection. A major concern related to Gibberella tricincta is the synthesis of mycotoxins such as nivalenol and other trichothecenes, which contaminate harvested grain and pose severe health risks to humans and livestock.

Integrated management strategies are required for control. This includes using certified, fungicide-treated seeds, implementing diverse crop rotation schemes to prevent the buildup of inoculum, and minimizing tillage if residue management is insufficient. In high-risk areas, the application of systemic fungicides at the heading stage is critical for maintaining crop health and safety.
