While it can cause significant rot, it is also studied for its dual role as a mycoparasite capable of suppressing other harmful fungal species in various soil ecosystems.

This pathogen is responsible for various types of rots, including pink mold rot and seedling damping-off. It affects a wide spectrum of crops, particularly tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and ornamental bulb plants. The fungus thrives on plant tissues, often causing decay and visible sporulation on the surface of infected fruits and stalks during the later stages of development.

The life cycle of the fungus is characterized by the production of conidia, which act as primary inocula.
