Gliocladium rot, also known as seedling damping-off, is a plant disease caused by the fungus Gliocladium roseum (often synonymous with Clonostachys rosea). As a soil-borne pathogen, it specifically targets germinating seeds and young seedlings, causing decay that leads to poor stand establishment in commercial agricultural fields.

The disease frequently attacks crops such as winter rapeseed and turnips, among other vegetable and field crops. By infecting the seed coat or the emerging hypocotyl, the fungus interrupts nutrient uptake and structural integrity, resulting in the characteristic damping-off symptoms that can destroy entire sections of a crop row.

Early symptoms include watery lesions on the stems of seedlings near the soil surface, causing them to collapse and die. In high-humidity conditions, one may observe the development of mycelium, which often exhibits a distinct pinkish or white coloration. As the infection progresses, roots become necrotic, turning brown or black, which effectively stunts growth and leads to the wilting of young plants.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of this disease. Cold, wet soil conditions during the sowing season are the primary drivers for Gliocladium outbreaks, as these conditions stress the crop and delay emergence. The fungus is persistent and survives in crop residues, making it a recurring issue in fields where crop rotation strategies are not strictly observed.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative measures:

  • Treating seeds with appropriate fungicides to protect them during the vulnerable germination phase.
  • Implementing rigorous crop rotation to break the life cycle of the soil-borne pathogen.
  • Ensuring adequate soil drainage and soil preparation to prevent the accumulation of moisture near the seedlings.
  • Maintaining field hygiene by removing or incorporating crop debris deep into the soil after harvest to limit the primary inoculum source.
