As the teleomorph of Colletotrichum fioriniae, this pathogen is widely recognized for causing anthracnose and various types of fruit rot, impacting a significant range of horticultural and agricultural commodities globally.

The host range of G. fioriniae is broad, commonly affecting pome and stone fruits, specifically apples and pears, as well as various vegetables. The pathogen induces necrotic lesions on leaves, stems, and fruits, which frequently results in fruit decay, causing substantial economic losses both in the field and during the post-harvest storage period.

The biology of this pathogen involves a complex cycle with both sexual and asexual reproduction stages. The fungus typically overwinters in plant debris, dormant buds, and infected bark tissues. During the growing season, conidia are dispersed primarily through water splash and wind, facilitating the colonization of new healthy plant tissues, particularly those with existing mechanical damage.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the prevalence of this disease. Optimal development occurs under high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. Frequent rainfall during the ripening stage of fruits significantly increases the susceptibility of crops, as it promotes spore germination and tissue invasion.
