Description
Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is highly susceptible to various fungal and oomycete pathogens, most notably Plasmopara viticola (downy mildew) and Erysiphe necator (powdery mildew). These pathogens belong to different taxonomic groups, but both represent major threats to global viticulture, affecting all green parts of the vine including leaves, shoots, and fruit clusters.
The symptoms of grapevine diseases vary significantly depending on the pathogen. Downy mildew causes chlorotic spots often referred to as 'oil spots' with subsequent white fuzzy growth on the underside of leaves. Powdery mildew manifests as a dusty white fungal coating that stunts growth and causes berries to crack, resulting in significant yield loss and fruit quality reduction.
The disease cycle is strongly driven by environmental conditions. Pathogens survive the winter as dormant spores in fallen leaves or as mycelium within bark crevices. During the spring, when temperatures rise above 10°C and wet weather persists, primary infection begins. Secondary infections occur rapidly throughout the growing season via wind-borne or splash-dispersed spores.
Humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures create the optimal environment for rapid disease spread. Densely planted vineyards with poor airflow are particularly vulnerable to severe outbreaks. The virulence of these pathogens can lead to total crop failure if not managed, as the leaf canopy is compromised, preventing proper fruit maturation and vine hardening before winter.
Effective vineyard management requires a strategic approach combining preventive measures and chemical control. Standard practices include:
- Canopy management such as pruning and leaf removal to improve aeration.
- Proper sanitation to remove infected plant debris from the vineyard.
- Scheduled applications of contact and systemic fungicides during critical growth stages.
- Selecting resistant grape varieties for new vineyard installations.
