Systematic position and pathogen type: The causal agent of barley stripe disease is Helminthosporium gramineum (teleomorph: Pyrenophora graminea). It belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. This pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily targeting barley crops across various climatic regions.

Diseases and host plants: The fungus causes barley stripe disease, which affects all aerial parts of the plant. Initial symptoms appear as pale yellow stripes along the leaves, which eventually turn necrotic and brown. Infected plants often show stunted growth and may fail to produce normal heads, leading to significant yield loss.

Biology and life cycle: The pathogen survives as mycelium within the infected seeds and to a lesser extent on crop debris. When the seed germinates, the fungus grows into the coleoptile and then systematically colonizes the developing plant tissues. The conidia produced on necrotic tissues serve as secondary inoculum for further spread during the growing season.

Conditions for development: Development is favored by cool and moist conditions during the early stages of plant development, specifically at temperatures between 10°C and 15°C. These conditions allow the fungus to infect the seedling before it emerges. Warmer temperatures generally inhibit the systemic spread of the mycelium within the host plant.

Harmfulness and control measures: Barley stripe causes reduced photosynthesis, poor grain filling, and decreased yield. Effective management strategies are essential for crop protection:

  • Utilizing disease-resistant barley cultivars is the most effective approach.
  • Rigorous seed treatment with systemic fungicides to eliminate seed-borne inoculum.
  • Crop rotation to reduce the load of pathogens in the soil.
