Description
Brown spot of rice is a devastating fungal disease caused by the pathogen Helminthosporium oryzae (also known as Bipolaris oryzae or its sexual stage Cochliobolus miyabeanus). It is a major fungal pathogen that affects rice crops worldwide, causing significant losses in both grain quality and total yield volume throughout the growing season.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of small, circular to oval lesions on leaves, stems, sheaths, and panicles. These spots typically have a dark brown center surrounded by a yellowish or light-colored halo. Severe infections lead to the death of leaves, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and grain discoloration, resulting in shriveled kernels that are undesirable for market.
The life cycle of Helminthosporium oryzae involves the production of conidia that are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and irrigation water. The fungus survives as mycelia or conidia on infected crop residues, seeds, and within the soil. Once conditions such as high relative humidity and temperatures between 25–30 °C are met, the spores germinate and penetrate the plant tissues.
Environmental stress plays a critical role in disease severity. Plants grown in nutrient-deficient soils, particularly those lacking sufficient potassium, are highly susceptible to the pathogen. Improper water management and unfavorable climatic conditions further facilitate the rapid spread of the fungus across rice fields, sometimes causing severe blights.
Effective control measures require an integrated pest management approach. Farmers should prioritize the use of resistant rice cultivars, certified disease-free seeds, and systematic seed treatments with fungicides. Cultural practices such as proper field sanitation, balanced fertilization, and optimized irrigation are essential to maintain plant health and reduce the inoculum pressure in the field.
