Description
The fungus Helminthosporium turcicum (also known as Exserohilum turcicum) is the causative agent of Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB). It belongs to the kingdom Fungi, class Dothideomycetes, and order Pleosporales. This pathogen is a major threat to maize crops worldwide, particularly in areas with warm and humid climates.
The disease is characterized by long, elliptical or spindle-shaped necrotic lesions on leaves, which are gray-green to tan in color. As the infection progresses, these lesions can merge, leading to extensive tissue death, premature leaf drying, and a significant reduction in the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
The life cycle of Helminthosporium turcicum begins with conidia production on crop residues. These spores are disseminated by wind and splashing rain to the leaves of young corn plants. Under favorable conditions, the pathogen undergoes multiple infection cycles per season, spreading rapidly from the lower leaves to the upper canopy.
High relative humidity and moderate temperatures between 20°C and 25°C provide the optimal environment for fungal germination and colonization. Wet conditions, such as prolonged dew or frequent rainfall, are critical for the development of epidemics, as the spores require free moisture to penetrate the plant epidermis.
Management of Northern corn leaf blight requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Key strategies include planting resistant hybrids, implementing crop rotation to break the infection cycle, and employing tillage practices that bury infested corn residue. Fungicide applications during the vegetative or early reproductive stages can also be highly effective in reducing disease severity and protecting yield potential.
