Description

Malupa vignae is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Pucciniales (rust fungi). It is the primary causal agent of cowpea rust, a significant disease affecting Vigna unguiculata (cowpea). This obligate parasite thrives by extracting nutrients from the host plant's living cells, primarily targeting leaves and stems.

The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of reddish-brown, powdery pustules known as uredinia on the foliage. As the infection progresses, these pustules rupture the plant epidermis to release spores. Severe infections lead to chlorosis, premature defoliation, and significant reduction in leaf area, which severely impairs the plant’s ability to fill pods and produce seeds.

The life cycle of Malupa vignae involves complex spore stages. Urediniospores serve as the primary source of inoculum during the growing season, facilitating rapid secondary spread through wind and rain splash. These spores can travel long distances to infect healthy plants, while teliospores help the fungus survive unfavorable conditions and persist on crop debris in the field.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental factors, with high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 26°C acting as the primary drivers of infection. Dew or leaf wetness is essential for spore germination and successful colonization of the host tissue. Therefore, periods of prolonged overcast weather and frequent rainfall are high-risk windows for potential outbreaks.

Management and control of the pathogen rely on an integrated disease management strategy:

  • Deploying rust-resistant cowpea cultivars.
  • Implementing effective crop rotation schedules to reduce inoculum buildup.
  • Removal and destruction of crop debris after harvest to break the overwintering cycle.
  • Proactive application of fungicides (e.g., strobilurins or triazoles) when environmental conditions favor disease development.
