Description

The causal agent of common smut in corn is the basidiomycete fungus Ustilago maydis. This pathogen is a specialized biotrophic parasite that infects only corn (Zea mays). It is characterized by the formation of large galls that replace the normal host tissue with dark, powdery spore masses.

Symptoms of the disease are easily recognized by the presence of irregular galls on stems, leaves, ears, and tassels. These galls start as pale, soft swellings covered by a shiny membrane and eventually erupt, exposing masses of dark brown to black teliospores. The infection disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to stunted growth and ear malformation.

The life cycle begins with teliospores surviving in the soil or crop residue. Under favorable moisture conditions, these spores produce basidiospores that are disseminated by wind or splashing rain to the young, actively growing parts of the host plant. The fungus injects itself into the tissue, where it triggers localized cell division, creating the characteristic galls.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. Hot, dry weather followed by rain is ideal for infection, as it provides both the heat needed for fungal growth and the moisture for spore germination. Damage caused by mechanical cultivation or insects creates easy entry points for the pathogen, significantly increasing the infection rate.

The impact of common smut on yield can be significant, especially in seed-production fields where ear infections lead to severe losses. Effective management requires an integrated approach to reduce the inoculum level in the environment:

  • Selecting and planting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids.
  • Implementing crop rotation to minimize the accumulation of spores in the soil.
  • Maintaining balanced soil fertility and adequate water supply to reduce plant stress.
  • Controlling corn pests to prevent tissue injuries that act as infection sites.
  • Practicing deep tillage to bury crop debris and speed up the decomposition of spores.
