Microdochium albescens is a fungal plant pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, within the genus Microdochium. Historically known as Rhynchosporium oryzae, this organism is a specialized pathogen that primarily targets rice plants. It is the causal agent of leaf scald, a significant fungal disease that affects rice-growing regions globally, leading to potential yield reductions.
Symptoms and host plants
The disease manifests as distinct lesions on leaves and sheaths. Initially, the spots appear as greyish or dark streaks, which eventually expand and turn whitish or light brown, often surrounded by a darker margin. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, covering large areas of the leaf surface, which causes premature death of the foliage and impairs the overall physiological health of the crop.
Biology and life cycle
The fungus survives in the form of mycelium and conidia on infected crop debris, soil, and contaminated seeds. The life cycle is heavily dependent on the presence of free moisture. Conidia are dispersed primarily by rain splashes and wind. Once they land on susceptible tissue under favorable conditions, they germinate and penetrate the epidermis, establishing an infection site and initiating a new cycle of spore production.
Environmental conditions and spread
High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C are the primary drivers for the epidemic spread of Microdochium albescens. Dense crop canopies with poor aeration are particularly susceptible to rapid disease development. Environmental stress on the host plants, combined with high nitrogen levels, can exacerbate the intensity of the symptoms.
Harmfulness and control measures
The disease causes significant damage by reducing the photosynthetic area, which leads to stunted plant growth and poor grain filling. Effective management strategies include:
- Planting resistant or tolerant rice varieties.
- Implementing crop rotation and proper sanitation to remove infected residues.
- Using certified, disease-free seeds treated with systemic fungicides.
- Applying foliar fungicides during the vegetative growth stage if environmental conditions favor disease outbreak.
