Lettuce anthracnose, caused by the fungus Microdochium panattonianum, is a significant plant disease belonging to the kingdom Fungi. This pathogen specifically targets the Asteraceae family, with lettuce (Lactuca sativa) being the most economically important host susceptible to this infection worldwide.

The symptoms of the disease typically appear as small, water-soaked spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these lesions turn tan or brown, and the dead tissue often tears, resulting in shot-hole patterns. In high-humidity environments, white or pinkish masses of spores may be observed on the undersides of the leaves, eventually leading to leaf collapse and decay of the plant head.

The life cycle of Microdochium panattonianum relies heavily on moisture. The pathogen survives between growing seasons in infected plant debris left in the soil. During the growing period, spores are produced and disseminated through water splashes from overhead irrigation or rain. Once they land on susceptible tissue, they penetrate the leaf surface, completing a new infection cycle in as little as a few days under optimal conditions.

Development and spread of the pathogen are driven by wet conditions. The fungus thrives at temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C combined with high humidity. Prolonged leaf wetness is essential for successful germination of the conidia, making greenhouse crops with poor ventilation or field crops during rainy seasons particularly vulnerable to severe outbreaks.

Effective control measures require an integrated approach to manage the disease pressure. Key practices include using certified pathogen-free seeds, ensuring proper drainage to prevent water accumulation, and strictly removing or burying infected crop residues. Crop rotation is essential to reduce the soil-borne inoculum. In professional agriculture, targeted fungicide applications are used as a preventive measure in regions with a high history of the disease.
