Monographella cucumerina
Monographella cucumerina
Description
Taxonomic classification and nature. Monographella cucumerina is a fungal pathogen classified within the division Ascomycota. It is recognized as a causative agent of significant diseases in cucurbitaceous plants. As an opportunistic parasite, it exhibits high adaptability to the host's vascular system, causing systemic infections that can be difficult to manage once established.
Diseases and host plants. This fungus is associated with Fusarium-like wilting, root rot, and stem lesions. Its primary host range includes Cucumis sativus (cucumber), Cucurbita species (squash, pumpkins), and Cucumis melo (melon). The pathogen causes tissue degradation, resulting in yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and the eventual collapse of the plant vascular system.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves both asexual and sexual reproduction stages. The pathogen persists in the soil or on infected plant debris as chlamydospores or thick-walled mycelium. During the growing season, conidia are dispersed by water splashes or contaminated tools. Once reaching a host, the fungus colonizes the roots or stem base, eventually moving upwards through the xylem.
Conditions for development and severity. Development is favored by high humidity, poor soil drainage, and moderate to warm temperatures (approx. 20–25°C). The economic impact is severe, as the pathogen significantly reduces crop yields and quality. Furthermore, infected fruits are susceptible to post-harvest decay, leading to significant losses during transport and storage.
Control and management measures. Successful management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical strategies:
- Strict crop rotation to reduce inoculum levels in the soil.
- Use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds to prevent early-stage infection.
- Implementation of good drainage practices to avoid root-zone saturation.
- Sanitation of greenhouse structures to eliminate overwintering structures.
- Application of registered systemic fungicides when initial symptoms appear.
