Monostichella leaf spot of hazel

Monostichella coryli

Description

Monostichella coryli is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is primarily identified as the causal agent of leaf spot diseases on species of the genus Corylus, commonly known as hazel or filbert.

The infection typically manifests as localized necrotic spots on the foliage. These lesions may be circular or irregular in shape and often appear dark brown or black. As the disease progresses, the coalescence of these spots can lead to extensive tissue necrosis, causing early leaf senescence and premature defoliation of the tree.

The biology of this pathogen involves surviving the winter season as mycelium or stroma within the leaf litter beneath the host trees. Upon the arrival of warmer, humid spring weather, the fungus produces conidia, which are then disseminated to healthy leaves via rain splash and wind currents, initiating the primary infection cycle.

High relative humidity and moderate ambient temperatures are the primary environmental drivers for the development and spread of Monostichella coryli. Densely planted orchards with limited airflow create an ideal microclimate for the pathogen, allowing it to move rapidly through the canopy during the growing season.

The economic impact is primarily linked to the reduction of the photosynthetic leaf area, which weakens the tree's vigor and reduces nut yields over time. Management strategies focus on sanitation and chemical control:

  • Removal and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate the primary inoculum source;
  • Regular pruning to improve air circulation within the canopy;
  • Application of protective fungicides during the critical periods of leaf development in spring.
  • Early identification of symptoms is vital for maintaining the health of hazelnut plantations. By integrating proper orchard hygiene with strategic chemical treatments, growers can effectively manage the disease and prevent significant yield losses throughout the season.
