Mucor hiemalis, commonly known as winter mucor, is a widespread fungus belonging to the phylum Zygomycota. It is a soil-borne organism that functions primarily as a saprotroph, decomposing organic matter, but it is also a significant opportunistic plant pathogen capable of causing severe post-harvest rot in various agricultural commodities.

This fungus is notorious for attacking a wide range of host plants, including potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, and various fruits. The pathogen exploits wounds or physical damage on the produce to penetrate the epidermal layers. Once established, it rapidly degrades plant tissues through the secretion of hydrolytic enzymes, causing a soft, watery, and often odorous rot.

The biology of Mucor hiemalis is characterized by rapid mycelial proliferation and high sporulation rates. The fungus reproduces mainly through asexual sporangiospores, which are easily disseminated by wind and water. Additionally, the formation of thick-walled zygospores provides the pathogen with high resilience against environmental stressors, allowing it to survive for extended periods in agricultural soil and crop residues.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of this disease. Mucor hiemalis thrives in environments characterized by high humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures. In storage facilities, the presence of condensation on the surface of produce acts as the primary catalyst for spore germination and rapid colonization of the storage bin.

Control strategies for this pathogen are centered on integrated pest management practices. Key measures include:

  • minimizing mechanical injuries during harvesting and handling;
  • ensuring proper curing and drying of produce before storage;
  • maintaining optimal storage temperatures and low humidity levels;
