It is primarily a saprotrophic organism, but under favorable conditions, it acts as a facultative parasite, causing various types of decay collectively referred to as mucor rot or mold diseases.
Host plants and associated diseases. This pathogen affects a wide range of agricultural crops. It is particularly dangerous for stored seeds of cereals, legumes, and vegetables, as well as for soft fruits and berries like strawberries, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The fungus triggers seed mold and soft rot, which manifests as rapid tissue degradation accompanied by a characteristic gray-white fluffy mycelium covering.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Mucor mucedo involves the development of mycelium, sporangia with sporangiospores, and zygospores. The mycelium grows aggressively on organic substrates, absorbing nutrients. Sporangiospores are easily dispersed by air currents and insects, allowing the infection to spread rapidly within warehouses and fields when environmental conditions are conducive.
Development conditions and impact. The fungus thrives in high humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures (between 15°C and 25°C). The economic impact includes the deterioration of seed viability, decreased germination rates, and total loss of commercial value for harvested produce. The fungus secretes enzymes that cause enzymatic hydrolysis of plant tissues, resulting in softening and decay of the affected plant parts.
Protection and control measures. Proactive management is the most effective way to combat this pathogen. Recommended control strategies include:
- Maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels in storage facilities.
- Thoroughly drying seeds before storage to reduce moisture content.
- Sanitizing storage containers and facilities.
- Utilizing high-quality, disease-free seed stock and applying fungicidal seed treatments.
- Regular inspection and immediate removal of infected produce to prevent secondary spreading.
