Description

Phytoplasmas, formerly referred to as Mycoplasmalike organisms, are specialized wall-less bacteria that live as obligate parasites within the phloem of vascular plants. Taxonomically, they are members of the class Mollicutes. Due to their lack of a cell wall, they exhibit pleiomorphic shapes and are restricted to the sieve tubes of the host plants they infect.

These pathogens are responsible for numerous plant diseases, commonly referred to as yellows or witches' broom diseases. They affect a wide range of agricultural crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, grapevines, and various woody ornamentals. Symptoms typically include leaf yellowing, stunting, floral malformation, and excessive branching, which significantly disrupt the plant's physiological processes.

The life cycle of a phytoplasma is inextricably linked to its insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers, planthoppers, and psyllids. These insects acquire the pathogen by feeding on the phloem sap of an infected plant. After a latent period during which the phytoplasma multiplies within the insect's body, the vector transmits the pathogen to a healthy plant while feeding.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of insect vectors are critical factors in the spread of phytoplasmal diseases. High temperatures and dry conditions often lead to rapid increases in vector populations, accelerating the dispersal of the pathogen throughout the field. Once the phloem is colonized, the flow of nutrients is severely restricted, leading to significant yield losses and often the death of the host plant.

Management of phytoplasma-related diseases relies heavily on preventative strategies, as curative treatments for established infections are currently ineffective. Key control methods include:

  • rigorous weed management to remove alternative host plants;
  • application of systemic and contact insecticides to suppress vector populations;
  • utilization of pathogen-free seeds and propagation materials;
  • implementation of crop rotation and spatial isolation of sensitive plantations.
