Mycosphaerella angulata

Mycosphaerella angulata

Description

Mycosphaerella angulata is an ascomycete fungus that acts as a significant phytopathogen, primarily affecting Vitis species. Often identified by its anamorphic stage, Cercospora vitis, this fungus is recognized as the causal agent of angular leaf spot in grapevines, impacting leaf health and photosynthetic efficiency across various grape-growing regions.

The primary diagnostic symptom of the disease is the development of irregular, angular spots on the foliage, which are constrained by the leaf veins. These spots initially appear as chlorotic or light brown lesions. As the fungal infection advances, these areas turn necrotic, developing a grayish-olive velvety layer on the underside of the leaves, representing the conidial sporulation of the pathogen.

The life cycle of the pathogen is centered on its survival on fallen, diseased leaves. During the winter, the fungus persists as mycelium and pseudothecia within the leaf litter. In the spring, with rising temperatures and moisture, the fungus produces ascospores that initiate primary infections when they land on new, susceptible grapevine tissues.

Disease progression is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Extended periods of rainfall are critical for the dispersal of conidia within the canopy. Cultural factors, such as poor vineyard hygiene and high canopy density, create an environment favorable for rapid disease spread.

Economic damage caused by M. angulata includes premature defoliation, which hampers the vine's ability to accumulate sugar and properly lignify its canes. Control measures should be integrated:

  • Sanitation by removing and destroying infected leaf debris during the dormant season.
  • Canopy management, including thinning and leaf removal, to ensure adequate airflow.
  • Regular fungicide applications, utilizing copper-based or systemic fungicides during high-risk weather periods.
