Description
Nakataea sigmoidea is a significant fungal plant pathogen, taxonomically classified within the order Magnaporthales. It is the causal agent of stem rot in rice (Oryza sativa), a disease that can lead to severe yield losses in rice-producing regions globally by compromising the structural integrity of the crop.
The disease primarily manifests as discolored lesions on the leaf sheaths and stems near the water line. As the infection progresses, the fungus penetrates the inner stem, causing tissue necrosis and structural weakening. This often results in lodging, where the plants collapse prematurely before harvest, directly impacting grain filling and quality.
The lifecycle of the pathogen is centered around the formation of sclerotia, which are small, dark, hardened resting structures. These sclerotia survive in the soil or within crop residue during the off-season. When fields are flooded for rice cultivation, the sclerotia float to the surface, come into contact with the stems, and germinate to initiate the infection cycle.
Optimal conditions for infection include temperatures between 25°C and 30°C and high humidity levels within the crop canopy. Poor water management, such as prolonged stagnant water, combined with high nitrogen application rates, significantly exacerbates the severity of the disease by promoting succulent growth that is highly susceptible to fungal penetration.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to control Nakataea sigmoidea. Effective strategies include:
- removing or burying infected straw and stubble after harvest;
- avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization which weakens plant defenses;
- implementing proper drainage cycles to disrupt the infection process;
- applying registered fungicides during the mid-tillering to booting stages if infection pressure is high.
