Neofusicoccum is a genus of fungi within the family Botryosphaeriaceae that acts as a significant plant pathogen. These fungi are globally recognized for causing severe dieback diseases, stem cankers, and wood necroses in a wide variety of woody host plants, including perennial crops and forest species.

The diseases caused by Neofusicoccum species are often referred to as botryosphaeria dieback. They primarily affect grapevines, apple trees, almonds, and eucalyptus. The pathogen colonizes the vascular tissues of the plant, disrupting water and nutrient transport, which ultimately leads to leaf chlorosis, wilting, and the death of branches or the entire plant.

The life cycle of the pathogen is characterized by the production of pycnidia and pseudothecia, which release conidia and ascospores respectively. These spores are dispersed by rainfall, wind, and potentially by insects. The fungus is an endophyte that can survive in living tissues for extended periods before transitioning to a pathogenic state when the host is stressed.

Environmental factors such as high humidity, frequent rain, and temperatures conducive to fungal growth significantly promote the spread of the pathogen. Vulnerability is increased by abiotic stressors, including drought, extreme temperature fluctuations, and inadequate pruning practices, which create infection courts for the fungal spores to enter the wood.

Effective management of Neofusicoccum requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention. Key strategies include:

  • Executing proper pruning techniques during dry weather to minimize infection.
  • Sanitizing pruning tools with disinfectants between plants to prevent spread.
  • Removing and destroying symptomatic wood to reduce inoculum pressure.
  • Applying protective fungicides to pruning wounds to seal them against colonization.
