Description
Fusarium blight, often associated with Fusarium head blight (FHB), is caused by a complex of fungal species within the genus Fusarium, most notably Fusarium graminearum. These pathogens are significant threats to cereal production worldwide, causing substantial losses in both yield and grain quality.
The disease affects various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It manifests in several forms, such as seedling blight, root rot, and the most destructive form, head blight. In the head blight stage, the fungus infects the spikes, leading to premature bleaching of spikelets and the development of shriveled, contaminated grains.
The life cycle begins with the fungus overwintering on infested crop residues such as corn stalks or wheat stubble. During warm and humid weather, especially around the flowering stage of the cereal crop, spores (ascospores or macroconidia) are released and spread via wind or water splash to the susceptible flowering heads.
The economic impact of the disease is severe due to the significant reduction in grain yield and test weight. More critically, the infection leads to the contamination of grain with potent mycotoxins. These toxins, produced by the fungus during colonization, pose severe health risks to humans and livestock, often rendering the harvest unfit for human consumption.
Management of Fusarium blight requires an integrated strategy to minimize the inoculum load and protect the crop during vulnerable stages. This includes:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops to reduce soil-borne inoculum.
- Selecting resistant or tolerant varieties adapted to the region.
- Utilizing tillage practices that promote the degradation of infected residues.
- Applying systemic fungicides at the onset of flowering to suppress fungal infection.
