Description

Okra mottle is a viral disease caused by the Okra mottle virus (OMoV), a plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family and the Begomovirus genus. This virus is characterized by a circular, single-stranded DNA genome. It is recognized as a significant threat to okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) production, capable of causing devastating losses in both open-field and greenhouse conditions.

The primary symptoms of the disease include mosaic patterning on leaves, leaf curling, puckering, and severe stunting of the entire plant. In many cases, infected plants show yellowing and reduced internode length, which drastically limits their photosynthetic capacity and reproductive potential. The reduction in pod quality and quantity significantly impacts the marketability of the okra crop.

The biology of the virus is intrinsically linked to its primary vector, the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The transmission is persistent, meaning the virus circulates within the vector's body. Once the whitefly acquires the virus through feeding on an infected plant, it can transmit the pathogen to healthy plants for the rest of its life cycle, facilitating rapid spread across the field even with relatively low initial inoculum levels.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of the whitefly population, such as warm temperatures and arid climate, directly correlate with the severity of outbreaks. Because the virus can also persist in alternative wild host plants, particularly among the Malvaceae family, these reservoirs play a critical role in the seasonal initiation of the disease cycle and its subsequent spread to commercial fields.

Management strategies for Okra mottle focus on vector control and host resistance. Effective measures include the application of systemic insecticides to manage whitefly populations, the use of physical barriers like fine mesh nets, and the removal of alternative weed hosts from the vicinity of crops. Crop rotation and the selection of tolerant or resistant okra varieties remain the most sustainable approaches to reducing the incidence and impact of this viral disease.
