Pea aphid

Description

The pea aphid (lat. Acyrthosiphon pisum) is a prominent pest of leguminous crops, belonging to the family Aphididae. While technically an insect pest, it acts as a primary vector for various plant viruses, making it a critical focus for integrated pest management in global agriculture.

This pest primarily attacks peas, lentils, alfalfa, clover, and other legume crops. By feeding on the phloem sap of young leaves, stems, and pods, the aphid causes severe plant stunting, flower abortion, and malformation of developing pods, which results in significant yield reduction in both forage and seed production.

The life cycle of the pea aphid is characterized by high reproductive rates through parthenogenesis. It typically overwinters in the egg stage on perennial legumes. With the onset of spring, nymphs hatch and transition to rapid colony growth. Throughout the growing season, multiple generations overlap, allowing populations to escalate quickly under favorable conditions.

Environmental factors such as mild temperatures (18–25°C) and high humidity are conducive to population growth. Conversely, extreme heat and drought can limit their spread. Beyond direct sap depletion, the aphids secrete honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, further interfering with plant photosynthesis and overall vitality.

Effective control strategies involve a combination of cultural practices, such as early planting and removing alternate host weeds, and the use of resistant crop varieties. Chemical control through systemic insecticides remains a common practice when pest density exceeds the economic threshold, especially during the flowering and pod-filling growth stages of the crop.
