Orange-grey penicillium (Penicillium aurantiogriseum) is a microscopic filamentous fungus within the kingdom Fungi and the genus Penicillium. It acts as a significant phytopathogen that primarily affects crops during storage, although it can exist as a saprotroph in soil and on decaying plant material in the field.
This fungus is responsible for various types of storage rot, particularly blue and grey molds. It targets a wide range of agricultural products, including potato tubers, carrots, onions, and cereal grains. The presence of the fungus leads to tissue softening and a distinct dusty, colored appearance on the surface of the infected produce.
The biology of Penicillium aurantiogriseum revolves around the rapid production of asexual spores (conidia). These spores are highly resistant to environmental stressors and are disseminated efficiently via wind, water splash, or contact with contaminated tools and storage surfaces. Once they land on a susceptible substrate, they germinate and penetrate the tissue through wounds.
Optimal conditions for growth include high relative humidity (usually above 85%) and moderate temperatures. The fungus thrives in poorly ventilated storage facilities where moisture accumulates on the surface of produce, providing the necessary conditions for the mycelium to spread rapidly from infected to healthy items in a storage bin.
The economic impact of this pathogen is severe. Beyond the direct loss of biomass due to decomposition, the fungus produces significant amounts of mycotoxins, such as penicillic acid. These secondary metabolites contaminate the food chain, posing health risks to both human and animal consumers, and rendering the crops unsuitable for market.
