Petunia asteroid viroid

The Petunia asteroid viroid (PAV) is a plant pathogen consisting of a single-stranded circular RNA molecule that lacks a protein coat. Classified under the genus Pelamoviroid and family Avsunviroidae, it acts as an obligate parasite. Unlike conventional viruses, this viroid relies entirely on the host's cellular machinery to replicate its genome within the chloroplasts of the infected plant cells.

This pathogen specifically affects ornamental plants, primarily within the Petunia genus. The disease it causes manifests as characteristic asteroid-like symptoms on the leaves, which significantly reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of the plants. Due to the systemic nature of the infection, the entire plant becomes a reservoir for the pathogen.

The biological cycle of the viroid involves rolling-circle replication within the plant's organelles. By manipulating the host's enzymes, the viroid generates multiple RNA copies, which then move through the phloem to infect distal parts of the plant. This rapid systemic colonization is a hallmark of PAV, leading to severe metabolic disruption and stunted growth in sensitive cultivars.

Environmental spread is primarily facilitated by horticultural practices. Contaminated pruning tools, human handling during cutting propagation, and contact between infected and healthy plants are the main transmission routes. Because of the viroid's structural stability, it can remain infectious on tools and surfaces, making hygiene in commercial nurseries critical for disease suppression.

There is no curative chemical treatment for PAV, making the roguing of infected plants essential to prevent further spread.
