Phloeospora multimaculans is a fungal pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi and the order Capnodiales, responsible for causing leaf spot disease in walnut trees (Juglans regia). This pathogen specifically targets the foliage, leading to necrosis and premature defoliation, which severely compromises the physiological balance of the host plant.

The primary clinical manifestation of this pathogen is the development of numerous small, often irregular, dark-colored spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these lesions merge, covering larger areas of the leaf surface. In late stages, the tissue dries out and becomes brittle, eventually leading to the premature abscission of the leaves, which hinders nut development.

The biological cycle of the fungus is characterized by its overwintering in fallen leaves and infected plant debris as mycelium and conidia. With the onset of spring rains and favorable temperatures, the pathogen produces secondary spores that are disseminated by water splashes and wind, infecting new tender leaves and facilitating the spread of the disease throughout the orchard canopy.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease prevalence. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within the dense canopy are key factors that trigger spore germination and infection. Orchards located in humid areas or those without proper maintenance of the tree structure are significantly more susceptible to severe outbreaks of the pathogen.

Effective management of Phloeospora multimaculans requires a combination of sanitation and chemical strategies to minimize the inoculum pressure:

• Sanitation protocols involving the removal and destruction of fallen leaves to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Proper canopy management through pruning to enhance air circulation and reduce humidity levels.
• Application of copper-based fungicides during the early spring bud-break phase as a preventive measure.
• Systemic fungicide applications during the growing season when environmental conditions favor fungal development.
