Description
Phomopsis helianthi is a destructive fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Phomopsis. It is the primary cause of Phomopsis stem canker in sunflower crops. As a specialized parasite, it targets sunflowers worldwide, causing significant economic losses in both yield quantity and oil quality.
Symptoms of the disease initially appear as small, chlorotic, V-shaped spots on the leaf margins. The infection then moves through the leaf petiole into the stem, where large, gray-brown necrotic lesions develop. These cankers weaken the structural integrity of the stem, often leading to lodging and total collapse of the plant before harvest.
The life cycle involves the survival of the fungus in crop debris, soil, and occasionally seeds. In the spring, pycnidia produce conidia that are disseminated via rain splash and wind currents to susceptible sunflower plants. High humidity and moderate temperatures are essential for the germination and penetration of the fungus into the host tissues.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. Prolonged periods of rainfall combined with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C create ideal conditions for the rapid spread of spores. Poor weed management can also serve as a reservoir for the pathogen, sustaining inoculum levels between sunflower seasons.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers are advised to utilize disease-resistant sunflower hybrids, implement long-term crop rotation schemes, and practice deep tillage to bury infected residues. Furthermore, timely application of systemic fungicides during the early growth stages is essential to mitigate the risk of severe infection and maintain yield stability.
