Systematic position and pathogen type: Phomopsis oryzae-sativae belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota. It is a well-known phytopathogenic fungus classified among the mitosporic (imperfect) fungi. As a specialized parasite, it targets the tissues of the rice plant, causing significant structural damage and disrupting the host's normal physiological development.
Diseases and host crops: The pathogen primarily affects rice (Oryza sativa). It causes a condition known as phomopsis blight or stem/sheath decay. The symptoms typically appear as necrotic lesions on leaf sheaths, stems, and panicles. If left unmanaged, the fungus can infect the developing grains, resulting in grain discoloration, reduced filling, and poor seed quality, which leads to substantial yield losses.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves the production of pycnidia, which serve as the primary reproductive structures. Inside these pycnidia, conidia are produced and disseminated through rain splash, wind, or agricultural equipment. The fungus survives unfavorable seasons as mycelium or pycnidia in crop residues left in the field or in the soil, initiating new infections during the following season when conditions become suitable.
Conditions for development and spread: High relative humidity (usually above 85%) and moderate to warm temperatures are ideal for the rapid development of Phomopsis oryzae-sativae. Field conditions that promote stagnant air, such as high plant density or heavy canopy, significantly accelerate the spread of the pathogen. Rainy weather during the booting and flowering stages of rice is particularly conducive to severe outbreaks.
Damage and control measures: The disease causes premature wilting, stem lodging, and grain shriveling, which negatively impact both quantity and quality of the harvest. Effective management strategies include:
- Cultivation of resistant or tolerant rice varieties where available.
- Implementation of proper crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal or deep burial of infested crop debris.
- Strategic application of systemic fungicides upon the early appearance of disease symptoms.
- Optimizing crop management by avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization that creates dense foliage.
