Phomopsis sclerotioides is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the class Deuteromycetes. It is specifically recognized as the causal agent of black root rot, a devastating disease primarily affecting cucurbitaceae family plants, including cucumbers, melons, and squashes, particularly in greenhouse cultivation systems.

The disease is characterized by the development of dark, necrotic lesions on the taproot and root collar. As the infection progresses, the root cortex decays, leading to the destruction of the plant's vascular system. Affected plants typically exhibit symptoms such as stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and severe wilting during periods of high transpiration, which eventually leads to plant death.

The life cycle of Phomopsis sclerotioides is characterized by the formation of small, black sclerotia. These resting structures allow the fungus to survive in the soil or in infected plant debris for several years. The pathogen is disseminated through contaminated soil particles, irrigation water, and the movement of tools during routine greenhouse operations.

The economic impact of this pathogen is significant, as it can cause widespread mortality in young seedlings and drastically reduce yields in mature plants. In heavy infestations, the pathogen thrives in environments with high soil moisture and moderate temperatures, making it a persistent challenge for commercial growers who rely on long-term production cycles.

Key strategies include steaming or chemical fumigation of greenhouse soil to eliminate resting structures, strict hygiene practices to prevent cross-contamination, and the use of resistant rootstocks.
