Phyllosticta citricarpa is a significant fungal pathogen known as the causative agent of Citrus Black Spot disease. This fungus belongs to the order Botryosphaeriales and is recognized globally as a serious quarantine pest, posing a major threat to citrus production in many countries.
The pathogen targets various species within the Citrus genus, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. The disease manifests primarily through the development of necrotic lesions on the fruit surface. These spots are often dark-colored with a sunken center, frequently surrounded by a chlorotic halo, which severely compromises the fruit's marketability.
The life cycle of the pathogen is complex, involving both an asexual stage (producing conidia) and a sexual stage (producing ascospores). Ascospores are produced in pseudothecia on decaying leaf litter and are ejected during rain events, being dispersed by wind and splashing water. Conidia are responsible for localized spread during wet, humid weather conditions.
Environmental requirements for the development of Phyllosticta citricarpa include warm temperatures and frequent wetting periods. The fungus thrives in subtropical and tropical climates where humidity remains high throughout the growing season. The pathogen can exist in an endophytic phase, where it colonizes healthy-looking plant tissue without showing visible symptoms until the plant undergoes stress.
