The pathogen is primarily responsible for yeast-related rot, which manifests as surface-level lesions and the softening of plant tissues. Infected produce often exhibits a visible white or creamy film, and the process of fermentation initiated by the yeast results in the production of off-odors and the complete loss of nutritional and commercial value of the harvested yield.
The biological cycle of this yeast is characterized by rapid vegetative reproduction through budding. Pichia membranaefaciens is highly efficient at metabolizing carbohydrates, allowing it to colonize the surface of fruits and vegetables quickly. It exploits physical breaches in the cuticle—such as scratches, punctures, or insect-caused damage—to invade the internal tissues of the host.

Effective strategies include minimizing mechanical injury during harvest, implementing proper cleaning protocols for facilities, and maintaining stringent temperature controls (low-temperature storage) to inhibit the enzymatic activity of the yeast. Fungicidal dips or biological control agents are also employed to manage the presence of this pathogen in commercial settings.
