Description

The causative agent of late blight is Phytophthora infestans, an oomycete pathogen that mimics fungal behavior. It is arguably the most destructive disease affecting potato crops globally, capable of decimating fields in a matter of days under favorable weather conditions.

Late blight primarily attacks potatoes and tomatoes. Initial symptoms include water-soaked spots on leaves that rapidly darken and expand, often surrounded by a pale green halo. On the tubers, the disease manifests as reddish-brown, sunken lesions that compromise the quality of the yield during storage.

The life cycle of the pathogen involves both sexual and asexual reproduction. Asexual spores, known as sporangia, are wind-dispersed and can travel long distances. In the absence of a host, the pathogen survives as mycelium in infected potato tubers kept in storage or left in the soil after harvest.

Disease development is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. High humidity levels, combined with cool to moderate temperatures, are the critical triggers for the rapid production and germination of zoospores, leading to explosive outbreaks in commercial and backyard plantations.

Economic losses due to late blight are massive, often necessitating a rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) program. Control strategies focus on combining chemical protection with fungicides, crop rotation, the use of certified disease-free seed, and the rapid disposal of cull piles to prevent spores from spreading.

  • Applying systemic and contact fungicides regularly.

  • Improving air circulation to reduce canopy humidity.
  • Thoroughly removing and destroying infected crop debris.
