Nutgrass rust (Puccinia canaliculata) is a basidiomycete fungus known as the primary causal agent of rust disease in plants belonging to the Cyperaceae family, particularly in the genus Cyperus, such as yellow nutsedge. This pathogen is globally recognized for its ability to significantly impact wild and cultivated sedge populations.

The infection manifests as small, erumpent pustules on the leaves and stems. These pustules initially appear orange, turning dark brown as the season progresses and teliospores are formed. Severe infections interfere with the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and a reduction in the development of tubers or rhizomes, which impacts total biomass yield.

The biology of Puccinia canaliculata is characterized by a macrocyclic, heteroecious life cycle. It requires two distinct hosts to complete its development: species within the Cyperus genus and the common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia). This complex cycle allows the fungus to survive across different seasons and colonize wide geographic areas through long-distance wind dispersal of its spores.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the spread of the pathogen. High relative humidity and warm temperatures are essential for spore germination and successful colonization of the host plant tissue. Dew formation on leaves provides the necessary moisture for the rust to initiate infection cycles, making early morning monitoring of fields vital for detection.

Management of this disease requires an integrated approach. The most effective cultural strategy is the eradication of common ragweed from surrounding areas to break the disease cycle. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate systemic fungicides during the early stages of symptom development. Proper field sanitation and preventing the build-up of initial inoculum are key to minimizing damage to high-value crops.
