Puccinia dioicae is a species of parasitic fungus within the order Pucciniales (rust fungi). It is an obligate biotrophic pathogen, meaning it relies entirely on living host tissues to derive nutrients. As a heteroecious fungus, it requires two phylogenetically unrelated host species to complete its complex biological life cycle.

The host range of this pathogen typically involves sedges (Carex spp.) as the aecial host, while the telial stage affects various species in the Asteraceae family. Infection manifests as pustules (uredinia) on the leaf surfaces, which break through the epidermis to release masses of rusty-colored spores, significantly impacting the host plant's physiological processes.

The life cycle is marked by the production of different spore types, including pycniospores, aeciospores, urediniospores, and teliospores. The urediniospores are responsible for the rapid spread of the disease within the growing season through wind dispersal, while teliospores allow the fungus to endure harsh winter conditions on crop debris or perennial weeds.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, heavy dew, and mild temperatures are critical for the successful germination of spores and the establishment of infection. During periods of excessive rainfall, the pathogen spreads more aggressively, which can lead to rapid disease outbreaks in susceptible fields if the primary host plants are present in the vicinity.

The economic impact of Puccinia dioicae includes reduced biomass, impaired photosynthesis, and loss of seed yield in susceptible agricultural species. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach: removing alternative hosts such as wild sedges near fields, promoting air circulation to reduce leaf wetness, and applying targeted fungicides, particularly systemic ones, during the early stages of infestation to prevent secondary infections.
