Description

Yellow rust, also known as stripe rust, is caused by the obligate biotrophic fungus Puccinia striiformis. Taxonomically, it belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum. This pathogen is highly specialized and relies entirely on living host plant tissues to complete its life cycle and thrive within agricultural ecosystems.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are wheat (both winter and spring varieties), although certain formae speciales can also infect barley, rye, and various wild grass species. The disease is characterized by the appearance of bright yellow, powdery pustules arranged in linear stripes along the leaf veins, which is the defining diagnostic feature of the infection.

The development of the fungus is driven by urediniospores, which facilitate rapid, repeated infection cycles throughout the growing season. The pathogen thrives in cool, moist conditions with optimal temperatures ranging from 9°C to 15°C. These conditions allow the spores to germinate quickly, leading to secondary infections that can rapidly spread across fields.

The economic impact of yellow rust is severe due to its ability to cause rapid senescence of photosynthetic tissue. By reducing the leaf area and depriving the plant of necessary nutrients, the disease significantly impairs grain filling, reduces grain weight, and lowers overall crop quality. In susceptible cultivars, yield losses can escalate to 70% under favorable conditions.

Effective management strategies against Puccinia striiformis include:

  • Deployment of resistant wheat cultivars with major or adult-plant resistance genes.
  • Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) practices to monitor early infection.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides, such as triazoles or strobilurins, during the early stages of disease progression.
  • Removal of green bridge hosts, such as volunteer wheat and wild grasses, before planting.
  • Balanced fertilization to avoid canopy density that promotes microclimate conditions favorable for fungal growth.
