Description

Taxonomy and pathogen type: Puccinia coronata is a specialized obligate biotrophic pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi, phylum Basidiomycota, and order Pucciniales. As a heteroecious rust fungus, it requires two distinct plant hosts to complete its complex biological life cycle, with species of Rhamnus (buckthorn) commonly serving as the alternate host.

Diseases and host range: The pathogen causes crown rust, a devastating disease primarily affecting cultivated oats (Avena sativa). Additionally, it can infect a wide range of wild grasses, which act as reservoirs for the fungus. The disease is characterized by the appearance of bright orange, powdery uredinia on leaf blades and sheaths, which can spread rapidly throughout the crop canopy.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Puccinia coronata involves multiple spore stages. In the spring, aeciospores from the alternate host infect oats, initiating the uredinial (repeating) phase. During the growing season, the fungus spreads through successive generations of urediniospores, leading to rapid disease development. As the crop matures, the fungus produces black teliospores on host debris, which remain dormant during the winter.

Environmental conditions and impact: Disease severity is highly dependent on moderate temperatures (15–25°C) and high humidity or leaf wetness. The pathogen induces significant physiological stress by disrupting photosynthesis and accelerating transpiration. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth and leaf senescence, often resulting in severe yield losses, reduced kernel weight, and diminished grain quality, threatening overall profitability.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of crown rust relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy that focuses on prevention and timely intervention:

  • Deploying resistant or tolerant oat cultivars is the most effective long-term solution.
  • Implementing landscape management to remove alternate host species (buckthorn) near production fields.
  • Destroying volunteer oats and grassy weeds to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Applying preventive or curative systemic fungicides (triazoles or strobilurins) when environmental conditions favor disease onset.
