Description

Pucciniastrum minimum is a highly specialized phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the phylum Basidiomycota, class Pucciniomycetes, and order Pucciniales. This pathogen is an obligate parasite that specifically infects plants of the Ericaceae family, primarily targeting blueberries and lingonberries.

The disease caused by this pathogen is known as blueberry rust. Symptoms appear on the upper leaf surface as small yellowish-green spots that darken over time. On the underside of the leaves, pustules known as uredinia develop, producing orange spores that are wind-dispersed over long distances.

The fungus has a heteroecious life cycle, meaning it requires two unrelated hosts. The hemlock tree (genus Tsuga) serves as the alternate host, where the fungus completes its aecial stage on the needles. In the spring, aeciospores are carried by the wind to young blueberry leaves, initiating primary infection. During the summer, the fungus spreads through asexual reproduction, often causing severe outbreaks in berry plantations.

Infection development is favored by moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 22°C and high atmospheric humidity, such as frequent fog or heavy dew. In dense, poorly ventilated blueberry fields, the pathogen spreads rapidly. The fungus overwinters as mycelium in the infected tissues of evergreen hosts like lingonberries or within fallen leaf debris, remaining viable until the next growing season.

The economic impact of blueberry rust is significant, as it leads to premature defoliation, which reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the shrubs. This weakening results in lower yields during the current season and impairs the formation of floral buds for the following year. In nursery settings, severe infections can render seedlings unmarketable.

  • Maintain adequate distance between blueberry plantings and hemlock trees.
  • Regularly prune and thin bushes to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
  • Remove and destroy fallen leaf debris in the autumn to reduce inoculum levels.
  • Apply copper-based or systemic fungicides upon the first signs of disease.
  • Ensure the use of certified, disease-free planting material.
