Blueberry rust

Pucciniastrum myrtilli

Description

The fungus Pucciniastrum myrtilli is a specialized plant pathogen belonging to the Basidiomycota division. It is the primary cause of rust disease in various Ericaceae species, including blueberries and huckleberries. As a heteroecious fungus, it requires different plant hosts to complete its complex biological life cycle, transitioning between evergreen shrubs and certain conifers.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease appear as small, bright yellow to orange spots on the upper leaf surface. On the underside of the leaves, the pathogen produces uredinia, which release masses of powdery spores. Severe infections lead to premature defoliation, which severely stresses the plant, reduces photosynthesis, and significantly compromises the yield potential of the blueberry crop.

The life cycle of the pathogen begins in the spring, often involving spruce as an alternate host, where the fungus produces aeciospores. These spores are wind-dispersed to blueberry plants, where they initiate primary infections. During the summer months, the fungus reproduces through urediniospores, which can initiate multiple cycles of infection, allowing the disease to spread rapidly across fields.

Favorable conditions for the development and spread of Pucciniastrum myrtilli include high humidity, persistent leaf wetness, and moderate temperatures. Regions with frequent summer rainfall or dense fog are particularly susceptible to outbreaks. Furthermore, poor canopy management and lack of airflow within the shrub rows create a microclimate that drastically accelerates the proliferation of the fungal spores.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to mitigate the economic impact of the disease:

  • Regular pruning to improve air circulation and reduce humidity within the foliage.
  • Sanitation practices, such as raking and destroying fallen leaves to remove overwintering sites.
  • Strategic application of copper-based or systemic triazole fungicides during the peak growing season.
  • Selecting resistant cultivars and avoiding planting blueberries near known alternative hosts like spruce trees.
These preventive measures are essential for maintaining plant health and crop productivity.
