Rhynchosporium leaf scald of rice

Rhynchosporium oryzae

Description

Rice leaf scald is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Rhynchosporium oryzae (often associated with Phyllosticta oryzae). It is classified under the kingdom Fungi and the class Dothideomycetes. This pathogen is a specialized parasite that primarily attacks rice plants, affecting the leaves and occasionally the panicles, causing substantial stress to the host.

The characteristic symptoms of the disease are leaf lesions that start as water-soaked spots. These spots enlarge into elongated or irregular patches with a greyish-white center surrounded by a dark brown margin. As the infection progresses, large areas of the leaf blade necrotize, which significantly impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity and reduces grain filling during the maturation stage.

The life cycle of Rhynchosporium oryzae is centered on survival in infected crop debris and contaminated seeds. The fungus remains dormant as mycelium or conidia until environmental conditions become conducive. In the spring, spores are disseminated through wind, rain splashes, and irrigation water, leading to the primary infection of new rice tillers.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture. High humidity (above 85%) and temperatures ranging from +20°C to +25°C are optimal for spore germination and mycelial growth. Densely sown fields and excessive nitrogen fertilization create a microclimate that facilitates the rapid spread of the pathogen throughout the paddy field.

Economic damage is caused by reduced yield and grain quality. To effectively manage this pathogen, integrated pest management (IPM) practices are required:

  • Use of certified, disease-free seed lots.
  • Crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle in the soil.
  • Deep tillage to bury contaminated rice stubble.
  • Balanced nutrient management to avoid excessive nitrogen levels.
  • Application of fungicides, such as strobilurins or triazoles, when weather conditions favor disease outbreaks.
