The Rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) belongs to the Reoviridae family and the Fijivirus genus. It is a double-stranded RNA virus causing severe systemic infections in various crops. As a major agricultural pathogen, it represents a significant threat to food security in regions where rice and maize are primary economic crops.

Host plants and symptoms
The virus primarily affects rice, but it has a broad host range including maize, wheat, barley, and various grasses. Symptoms typically manifest as dark-colored, waxy, or gall-like swellings on the leaves and stems. Infected plants exhibit severe dwarfing, shortened internodes, and dark green discoloration of the foliage, often resulting in complete sterility or lack of grain formation.

Biology and life cycle
Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, specifically planthoppers like Laodelphax striatellus. The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding and persists in the body for the remainder of its life cycle. Since the virus can be transmitted from the mother to her offspring (transovarial transmission), the insect population can remain infectious throughout successive generations, sustaining the virus reservoir in the field.

Environmental conditions and impact
Development of the disease is highly correlated with the seasonal migration patterns of the vectors. Warm and humid conditions favor both the reproduction of planthoppers and the viral transmission process. The economic impact is devastating; severe outbreaks can lead to total crop failure, as the systemic nature of the disease prevents the plant from maturing properly and producing marketable yields.

Management and control strategies
Control of RBSDV is challenging due to the efficient transmission by insect vectors. Management should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to limit vector access to the crops.
