Herbicides are chemical substances utilized in modern agriculture to eradicate or suppress unwanted vegetation that competes with crops for essential resources. They are classified into non-selective herbicides, which target all plant types, and selective herbicides, which act only on specific plant groups. Furthermore, they are categorized by their application timing: pre-emergence herbicides, which are applied to the soil before weed sprouting, and post-emergence herbicides, applied directly to the foliage of established weeds.

The biology of herbicide activity involves targeting vital physiological pathways in plants. Many compounds function by inhibiting enzymes responsible for amino acid synthesis or by disrupting photosynthesis. Once absorbed by the weed, the substance is translocated through the vascular system, leading to systemic failure and plant death.

The efficacy of these chemicals is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as ambient temperature, relative humidity, and soil moisture. For optimal performance, herbicides should be applied during the weed's most vulnerable growth stages. Poor conditions can limit uptake, reduce the translocation process, and compromise the desired control levels.

The damage caused by weed interference is immense, as it leads to nutrient deprivation and reduced crop yields. Control strategies emphasize the importance of rotation and judicious use to prevent resistance development. Effective weed management requires precise calculation of dosages and the use of appropriate application technology to ensure full field coverage.
